TORRENS VALLEY TENNIS
TORRENS VALLEY TENNIS
The Adelaide Hills Masters
Cycling Club recently marked the
commencement of the 2018 racing
year with a testing initial event.
For those riders who had made best use
of free time during the festive season, the
race provided a chance to test their new
found fitness, while for others, it was a
chance to lament the indulgences of the
Starting at Flaxley, the course wound
its way to Echunga and Meadows on
reasonably gentle gradients.
There were some climbs out of Meadows
to raise the heart rates before the ride
through Paris Creek to Strathalbyn.
From there, it was all on the rise to the
finish through Doctor’s Creek and Echunga
and a return to Flaxley for the finish.
The A-grade riders averaged an amazing
36kmh on the course as a buffed Ben
Briggs appeared focused from the start.
The pack were not easily intimidated and
rode as a close knit group until a short,
steep climb on the Paris Creek Road.
Briggs powered away, however, Craig
Beddome and Sam Jeffries managed to
cling to his wheel.
Richard McKenzie, Graeme Orchard and
Dan Kelly made the mistake of allowing
a gap to form which they were unable to
breach and were left languishing as they

The three leaders stuck together up the
hard climbs in the latter stages of the race,
leaving the way open for a sprint finish.
Sheer determination ultimately gave
Briggs a narrow win over Beddome with
Jeffries just a couple of metres behind in
Renowned climber Alison Skinner tried to
shake her B-grade opposition on the hills
but Mike Elleway and Tony Wilson had

a sprint finish evolved and a single
second gave Skinner victory with only
microseconds separating second placed
Elleway and Wilson.
John Crafter broke through for a well
deserved win in C-grade where he was a
clear winner with a time faster than some
of the B-grade riders.
A large D-grade group broke up on the
climbs out of Meadows and Ian Lett, Sarah
Rawlinson and Chris Attrill produced a
clear break – or at least they thought they

dropping off Attrill, while Rawlinson just
managed to ‘hang on’ and the two worked
together until Lett rode away in the sprint to
Rawlinson finished second and Attrill
persevered for third place.
The E-grade entrants were a diverse
group so handicaps were given to make for
a more even race.
Gavin Tamblyn continued his good form
from 2017 to win with John Antonio riding
a strong race for second spot and scratch
rider Barry Pattison finished third.
Toward the end of last year, the Hills club
also donated $470 dollars to the Mt Barker
The donation was part of an annual
initiative by the Masters riders who conduct
a charity event each year where all the
entry money is donated to a charity, while
no prizemoney is offered for the race.
Previous donations have been made to
the Mt Barker Mens Health Group and
the Cancer Society’s ‘Ride For A Reason’

Kersbrook teams recorded very similar
victories during last Saturday’s round of Torrens
Valley senior A/B-grade tennis fixtures.
Competition leader Mt Pleasant played host to a red hot
Kersbrook, and while conditions were marred by some rain,
play eventually managed to get underway.
Kersbrook started well by winning three of the opening
four doubles sets.
New recruit Alex Endenburg and Adam Wake of Kersbrook
made short work of Ben and James Wilhelm to win 6-1 and
Jed Russell/Hayden Watson dished out similar treatment
against Rebecca Taheny/Daniel Pym to also win 6-1.
Mt Pleasant’s first win came in the bottom doubles with
Andrew Miller/Bronwyn Taheny having a good 6-4 win over
Jade Newman/Lauren Paues.
Kersbrook continued to pull away during the singles
bracket as it added five further wins.
At the top of the order, Endenburg demonstrated to B.
Wilhelm who was in charge by comfortably winning 6-2.
Watson struggled in the blustery conditions, but did
enough to win 6-4, while Russell played well for a 6-0
The set of the day was the seventh singles between Miller
and Newman where there was very little separating them
throughout with points very difficult to win, but in the end
Miller scraped home 7-5.
At the end of the singles, Kersbook lead eight sets to four
and needed just one more victory to secure the honors.
Second placed Kersbrook proceeded to win three of the
reverse doubles to secure its second win over Mt Pleasant
for the season, notching up a solid 11 sets 85 games to Mt
Pleasant five sets 52 games.
Kersbrook Blue host to Woodside, with the start also
delayed due to rain.
When the rain cleared and the courts were swept, the
clash got underway in very windy conditions which made
good play near impossible.
Kersbrook Blue started well by winning the opening four
The closest set was the top doubles with Darren Wake/
Bill McKechnie handling the conditions a little bit better to
eclipse Michael Fry/Andrew Green 6-4.
The home team easily won the other doubles sets with the
loss of just five games.
Kersbrook Blue increased its lead during the singles as
Darren and Bailey Wake, both won their sets in tight battles
Green and Greg Harrison got Woodside on the board as
each won their singles 6-2, having made the most of the
wind, while Woodside’s Kate Owen also had a confidence
boosting 6-2 win.
With the overall result all but decided, honors were shared
in the reverse doubles with Woodside winning the top
and third sets, but Kersbrook won the second and fourth
to complete an 11-79 to 5-57 victory and consolidate third
Both the hosting Mt Pleasant Blue and the Gumeracha
Junior B teams were short of regular players last Saturday.
Both were ably assisted by members of their C-grade
teams, and fittingly, the result was a draw at 3-27 apiece.
The top doubles set went the home team’s way, while
Gumeracha took out the second doubles clash.
During the singles, Max Bubner of Mt Pleasant Blue used
well-controlled power in his 6-1 defeat of Riley Pearce.
Will Bubner played a steady game against Gumeracha’s
Tristan Edwards, who eventually took the set 6-3.
Jelena Mik appeared to have the better of Mt Pleasant’s
Sean Doyle, until Doyle fought back and claimed victory.
Aiden Edwards balanced the contest with a 6-5 win in a
well-matched battle with Brennan Watkins.
