The 2016 spring squash season
continued to build momentum as
Mt Barker’s State Open 4 South
team began its campaign at home
last Wednesday night.
Barker faced the might of Next Generation,
trying to milk as much advantage as it could
from the home court.
First up was Barkerites number one
Paul Thomas against his opposite Nick
Thomas didn’t click into gear straight away
as Hadjinicolaou sought to dominate with
consistent depth, power and placement.
It wasn’t long before Thomas shifted into
gear taking the contest up to his higher
Some long rallies could have gone either
way and games went down to the wire,
however, Thomas was left to rue his slow
start as Hadjinicolaou managed to just
scape ahead in the decider to win 3-2.
Barker number two Dave Jarvis struggled
to bring his awesome racquet finesse to
bear against adversary Wayne Keoghan in
a frustrating match.
Keoghan gave Jarvis little room to craft
his shots and managed to retrieve several
winners which Jarvis hit.
Whenever the ball entered the rallying
stage, Keoghan mercilessly dropped the
ball to the front, stranding Jarvis at the back
of the court.
Keoghan ran out a 3-0 winner, putting
pressure on Barker to come from behind.
Feeling up for the fight, number three
Alison Skinner was in good form against
Andrew Feutrill as she executed her depth
game to perfection.
Seeking to force the pace, Feutrill
attempted to hit too many early winners
which consequently allowed the ball to drift
to the middle of the court.
Skinner made short shrift of opportunities
as she kept her error count down to
practically zero and she ran out a
comfortable 3-0 victor, giving Barker a
chance of striking back.
Graham Smith encountered the much
higher ranked Matthew Evans in the final
bout of the evening.
Smith seemed a little rusty as he flexed
his match-poor squash muscles against his
Giving Smith scant opportunity to get his
eye in, Evans punished anything short and
kept the ball tight and deep throughout.
Smith offered glimpses of his previous
form, but he could not string enough
together to push his adversary into making
mistakes, losing 3-0 to give Next Generation
the night’s honors 3-1.
Now only Barker’s Division 1 team awaits
the first engagement as it travels deep into
enemy territory to face Norwood Blue on its
The local Mt Barker league continued
its ceaseless warfare as the might of the
Empire clashed with the growing forces of
the Rebellion and the Sith faced perennial
foes the Jedi.
Opening the proceedings for the Empire
and Rebels, young Trooper Lenny Westley
attempted to out manoeuvre reserve Green
Leader Lachlan Keen in what was to be his
first match of the evening.
Westley began his encounter strongly
taking the fight up to a much improved Keen
and forcing some long rallies.
Dropping his concentration in the second
stanza, Westley opened the door for Keen
as his frustration led to more errors while
Keen kept his eyes firmly on the ball and
Regrouping somewhat in the third game,
Westley got a few more back but could not
completely shake his frustration and fell to
too many unforced errors.
Both players covered the floor well but it
was to be Rebel victory with Keen claiming
the honors 3-0.
Young Rebel Pilot Grant White then faced
a determined Commander Rowan Elliot.
In a see-sawing affair both players duelled
it out in the back of the court.
Engaging in some long rallies, the ball
stayed deep as each player struggled to
find an opening in the other’s defence.
Anything short was run down by the pace
of each other and the game returned to its
deep driving, energy-sapping rallies.
As the pendulum swung back and forth it
was White who got to the podium first as
he managed to open a break in the final
game to win 3-2 for the Rebels in a great
Reservist Dave Campbell climbed back into
the pilot’s seat as he crossed racquets with
Commodore Kaye Lucas in a fascinating
contrast of raw power versus finesse.
Opening with some lightning drives
Campbell blasted the ball past a stranded
Lucas, but Lucas quickly recalibrated her
targeting computer and had Campbell
struggling to return her increasingly tight
serves and drops.
During the last two games Campbell
managed to gain greater purchase on the
ball which forced Lucas to rush her shots.
Again Campbell slammed the ball with
increasing might but if he allowed anything
to stray into Lucas’ hitting zone, it was dealt
Still it was Campbell’s night and he won
3-2, giving the Rebels an unassailable 3-0
Wanting to regain some pride for the
Imperial Forces, Grand Moff Glenn Drewitt
brought all of his mendacious court stokes
to bear on Wing Commander Joe White.
Drewitt had White second guessing himself
as he sprinted around the court trying to
retrieve some shots which appeared to
warp space, forcing errors from White.
As the match progressed the tables
seemed to turn as Drewitt’s energy waned
and errors began to creep in, while White
capitalised to gain the advantage.
In the end the mounting errors proved
too much for Drewitt to stem and White
continued the Rebel advance to win the
rubber 3-2 in a great spectacle.
Admiral Josh Buckley brought his power
and pace to bear on reserve Squadron
Leader Adam Benjamin.
Benjamin was more than up for the
challenge as he slammed the ball hard both
when serving and in general play, causing
Buckley to unleash his floor coverage.
Long rallies and tight games could have
gone either way as each player traded blows.
However, it was Buckley who used the
pace of the ball fractionally, and in a great
match to watch, he prevailed, giving the
Empire its solitary victory of the night, in a
In the next quadrant, the Sith prepared and
elaborate series of stratagems designed to
catch the Jedi off guard.
First into the firing line was youngling Jack
Kitson against experienced Sith assassin
At first it seemed as though Kitson had
her measure as he ran down every ball and
delivered some decisive winners with his
Blanchard struck back, displaying her
understanding of the court with tantalising
placement which had the ball almost in
reach of Kitson’s flailing racquet.
In spite of producing the odd winner,
Blanchard controlled the T and commanded
the next three games to win 3-1, bringing
the Sith plan into action.
Stalwart Jedi Knight Shane Paterson
wanted to emulate his good form from the
previous week against reserve Sith Kieran
Smith charged out of the blocks seeming
to stun a struggling Paterson, but it wasn’t
long before his skills switched back on and
had Smith struggling to return his well-
placed high drives.
The games fluctuated as each player
offered bursts of dominance with their
In the end it seemed as though Paterson’s
energy began to flag as he tried to finish
points a little too early, while Smith pounced
on anything loose to take the match 3-2.
Seeking to get the Jedi on the board, Adept
Raice Kincaid took on the ever-eager Sith
Hunter reserve Lachlan Keen, in his second
match of the evening.
Appearing as though his first match was
just a warm up, Keen had Kincaid on the
hop using his pace to good effect to cut off
Kincaid’s superior placement.
Kincaid was far from done as she dug
deep and displayed an unexpected turn of
pace, meshing seamlessly with her precise
drops and high serves.
Keen came to terms with Kincaid’s front
wall game and began to track back into
Again Kincaid mixed up her game and
caught Keen going the wrong way to finally
get the Jedi on the board, winning another
entertaining stoush 3-2.
In a battle of the masters, Jedi Stephen
Wilkinson faced his opposite Luke Grindrod
in a power-laden encounter.
Grindrod powered out of the blocks before
Wilkinson adjusted to the pace and fought
Charging around, the two engaged in
many long rallies which could have gone
Wilkinson lacked a little concentration to
let a more precise and consistent Grindrod
back into the second game, which he
The third game again could have gone
either way as each player tessellated the
floor with their pace and shots, but again it
was Grindrod’s consistency which proved
the difference as he won 3-0, giving the
night to the Sith.
Wanting to snuff out any chance of a Jedi
resurgence, Sith Grand Master John Trigge
was ruthless in his match against newly
recommissioned Jedi Knight Clint Hodgson.
Hodgson struggled to find his length
and timing against Trigge’s placement,
most returns going midcourt where Trigge
dispatched them seemingly at will.
Hodgson did offer glimpses of his former
skill, eking a few crisp drives from only
marginally loose shots.
However, Trigge could not be overcome
once in front and ramped up his serve to
close out the match 3-0 in an awesome
display of court and racquet control,
emphatically yielding the night 4 -1 to the
