The Mt Barker Council is still deciding
whether to co-fund a $9m sporting facility
expected to be constructed at St Francis
de Sales College this year.
The private school asked the council to
contribute up to $2.5m for the expansion
of the gym from two indoor courts to four,
in addition to extra catering facilities and
community use rooms.
The council accepted the school’s request
at a meeting in December. However,
it said more time was needed before
making a decision.
The school hopes to construct the indoor
sport and function centre during the year.
The council’s general manager of
infrastructure and projects, Brian Clancey,
said the council was still evaluating the
implications of co-funding the project but
would make a decision before the end of

Small landholder Colin Wilson is
no stranger to the challenges that
come with small farms – a subject
that the Goolwa to Wellington
Local Action Planning Association
(GWLAP) plans to explore this
Mr Wilson and his wife, Wendy,
moved to a 105ha property in 2002
when they bought their farm at
Belvidere near Strathalbyn.
What followed was a long journey
learning how to achieve the best
results from the land.

“You don’t buy a heap of sheep
and suddenly know what to do with
them – so you’ve got to learn from
somewhere,” he said.
Despite the challenges of small
farming, the Wilsons have seen
good results, something they largely
attribute to sourcing the right
information – but Mr Wilson said this
was not always the case.
“I’ve come across people who have
been doing similar things to what
we’ve been doing and they’ve been
doing them for a lot longer and still
haven’t got a grip on it,” he said.
“Don’t be afraid to seek information,
seek it from as many sources as you
can and constantly cross reference –
and don’t be afraid to pay for advice.”
He has also shared his experiences
with the GWLAP as part of its project
to explore the benefits collaborative
farming could have on small
GWLAP community engagement

still in its early stages, aimed to
identify the unique difficulties
faced by small landholders as well
as exploring different models of

the project and hopes it results in
initiatives that will provide training
and skills for small landholders.
“A real area I can see is in acquiring
information – whether that’s through
training – that’s where the scheme
might have a lot of merit,” he said.
“Generally speaking the smaller
farmers feel a little bit intimidated.
“If they had their own little group
where they were all small farmers,
at somewhere near the same level
of knowledge, they don’t feel so
intimidated about asking what they
see as dumb questions.”
The project, which is funded by
Natural Resources SA Murray-
Darling Basin, is expected to be
completed by June this year.
