Betty Slater and Malcolm Rossini celebrated their
Twins Malcolm Rossini and Betty Slater
celebrated their 90th birthday in the Upper
Sturt Soldiers Memorial Hall on April 19
with about 150 guests wishing them well.
The twins descend from an Italian family
which arrived in SA from Lombardy in 1879
and took up land in Upper Sturt.
Born in their family home on Upper Sturt
Road on April 21, 1925, they were inseparable
in their youth, working on the family property
and running the local dance.

Soldiers and fitness enthusiasts
sweated it out at the Woodside
Army Barracks recently for a
sports event to commemorate the
Centenary of Anzac.
The soldiers and a number of
crossfit enthusiasts – a sport which
includes high-intensity interval
training, weightlifting, gymnastics
among other exercises – competed in

jumping, lifting and running to loud
music which kept them pumped
throughout the day as there were five
rounds of exercises.
Tasks included rowing, squats,
pushing boxes, running and deadlifts.
Commanding Officer Berni White
said the event was in memory of six
defence force members killed while
serving in Afghanistan.
The soldiers were Sergeant Brett
Wood, Corporal Cameron Baird,
Lance Corporal Andrew Jones,
Private Nathanael Galagher, Lance
Corporal Mervyn McDonald and
Corporal Ashley Birt.
“It’s a crossfit throwdown event
and we have invited other units
of Adelaide to put in a team,”
Commander White said.
The barracks established a new
gym in February which gives
soldiers access to boxing facilities,
high intensity circuits and crossfit
equipment to attain battle hardening

said a 50 day program was offered

to test the soldiers.
